John King's mother worked in the industrial glass industry specializing in plate and auto glass manufacturing. His father was a renowned stained glass maker and ground breaking glass artist in contemporary glass sculptures. As a young boy, until he began showing work on his own, he worked as an apprentice for his father, learning traditional styles of art glass as well as new techniques such as blasting, slumping, lamenting, chipping and fusing.
King began showing work in contemporary art galleries while studying Art at the University of Louisville in the late nineties - by the early 2000s he had acquired a fairly popular name for his sculptures blending glass and photography. He also gained recognition with a new form he created using etched glass to project images on the areas around the sculptures by manipulating the light and shadows.
Works have been shown in many galleries and museums in Louisville including Gallerie Hertz, Swanson and Reed gallery, The Speed Museum, and the Water Tower museum, as well in New York, and Europe. He also co-curated the alternative art galleries 953 Gallery in Louisville, and the Asterisk Gallery in Brooklyn, New York.
Today King lives and work in Louisville as an independent art director; working on everything from major motion pictures to interior and exterior design, as well as private and public sculpture. He also runs a small music label called Louisville is For Lovers, that has been releasing original work by musicians such as Will Oldham, My Morning Jacket, Pajo, and others for over a decade.
