"As an artist I like to keep my work open to interpretation and not limit the impact or intimacy of experience with literal description. The general concept to the Underground Railroad project i am undertaking is a large plant like form constructed of steel. Railroad ties projecting from the ground are linked with cultural constraints to the vertical stripes of the U.S. flag or rows of a field in which the enslaved where required to work. The twisted steel stripes are intersected by a pair of horizontal lines representing the Ohio river which separated the free state of Indiana. These stripes then disperse like stars in the northern sky that led so many seeking freedom."
Previous work samples:
Born in western Kentucky, where, influenced by rural isolation and 70’s hot-rod culture, his artistic language had begun to develop by early adolescence. Supplies from his father’s auto-body shop and endless auto/mechanical discard allowed for great artistic growth. Following formal training at Murray State University, he supports himself by making bronze sculpture in Louisville, KY.
"While many of my objects allude to natural form such as limbs, stems and seed forms, body parts or marine life, there is never an attempt to make links to particular plants or species. The natural forms and organic lines, juxtaposed against metallic solidity are a translation of my influences. An alchemical process transmits recycled wood and metal scrap into polished energy and movement. My preferred medium is cast bronze, but many of my sculptures are constructed from recycled, reused and rehabilitated materials."
