Welcome!

The project's theme for this first year will feature the Ohio River. Histories featured are interconnected with this important body of water.

The Ohio River, which forms the border between Indiana and Kentucky, has been a center of human life for thousands or years. Long before the first European explorers ventured into the Ohio Valley, the river’s rugged banks sheltered a succession of prehistoric cultures, including the Paleo-Indian, Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian.

When Europeans began arriving during the 17th century, they encountered Native American Tribes such as the Shawnee, Miami, Potawatomi, and Wyandotte.

During the 18th and 19th centuries as European powers struggled for control of the trans- Appalachian frontier and as settlers pursued their dreams of creating new lives and fortunes in the Ohio Valley the river was a primary channel for exploration and settlement.

The New Albany Bicentennial Public Art Project builds public awareness of, and interest in, New Albany's upcoming bicentennial by presenting stories of our history through the eyes of local and regional artists.

We are eager to include diverse and new media in addition to traditional sculpture, and are excited to be able to celebrate the city's history through contemporary art.

The planned, guided walking tours of the exhibition will introduce the historical theme or story that inspired the work of art, and will direct visitors who want to learn more toward historical photos and other interesting information.

We encourage you to visit local organizations such as New Albany Floyd County Public Library, local museums, and other pertinent historic sites throughout the downtown area to learn more about the community around us.
